Touchback – The Novel

Touchback the novel, like the film, was born of failure.

The original screenplay was written around fifteen years ago.  It was optioned by John Madden (the football legend) and his son first, then it went to various studios like Warner Brothers and Morgan Creek. Each time, the companies would option the story with the intent of making the film.

Each time, for one reason or another, the film never happened. The script kept coming back to me, unproduced.

After the last option expired in 2009, it was, for all intents and purposes, a dead project.

I came across the blog of Nicholas Sparks, author of The Notebook, Dear John, A Walk To Remember and was inspired by his story about publishing his first novel. To help the film get made, I decided to write Touchback as a novel in the hopes that if it was published and found success, it would finally get made into a film.

I was 70,000 words into the manuscript when I got the call from a company that had found the money to make Touchback the film with me directing.

Because I am certain the mere act of writing the book made the film a reality, I am grateful to Nicholas Sparks.

Once I finished the film, I realized I had to finish the book. So as the film is starting as a limited platform release on 4/13, those that can’t see the movie the first week in their hometown can download or order the book instead.

The book is available on Amazon ebook now. Hard copy also available.

I’d love to hear from anyone who reads the book or sees the film and get your thoughts and opinions!
